So it's pretty rare in the US, we're gonna have one on August 21st.
You'll see a partial in Ohio but it looks like you'll have to head south if you wanna see the Totality part which is suppose to be the best part.

Anyone planing on traveling south to check it out?
Im gonna head to Hopkinsvile KY.. suppose to be the longest duration of anywhere in the US.

If you plan on looking at it make sure you get some solar glasses, I guess some welders goggles will work if they're dark enough.

The only naked eye safe part is totality.

It appears our move this week from southern Illinois to Ohio is a few weeks premature! If we stayed here through Aug 21 we would be in the direct path of the total solar eclipse.

My family is heading out to Carbondale IL. It will be in totality this year and again in the same spot seven years from now in 2024.

The one in 2024 will have totality here in Ohio. Indianapolis and Toledo both I think

We just got back, Ended up going to TN instead because we had a guaranteed spot.

Getting in was easy, getting out.. omg.. the traffic, the construction bottle necks, the wrecks.
We was grid locked on the highway in the middle of the night due to mass exodus, crazy.

It was worth it though.. No video can do it justice.
The partial is pretty cool but the totality is what you really wanna see.
It was brutally hot even in the shade, but as it approached totality the air got cooler and the wind died down, the light took on a sort of a gloomy quality even though it was still broad day light.

and then in the final moments you could see the light fading like someone turning down a dimmer switch.

The sun looked like a black hole with a white ring and this aura coming off the edges.

There is no other word but awesome.
We didn't stick around for the 2nd part of the partial phase, too hot and if you watched the first pot it's just the same in reverse.

All of our cell's pretty much lost service after the eclipse I guess everyone chocking the system with google maps requests took us 45mins just to get it working.

God willing Im catching the next one here in Ohio is should not be missed, It's gonna be even longer.

2 professors from NYU was there 1 of them said the temperature drop was 11 degree's F. you could definitely feel it..

Just imagine if the sun disappeared.. Wouldn't have to wait to starve, we'd be frozen in no time.
It amazes me they can predict these things long in advance with pinpoint accuracy.

my family went out to illinois for the event. Yes totality was inbelievable. i had seen > 90% before, but it does not even come close.

I have some photos i will post up later

We didnt have a real destination, just headed toward the totality zone where it will be in totality again in 2024. Got to Pickneyville IL where we just over 2 minutes of totality and drove west out of town. found an old cemetery with several large shade trees and set up there. Had one other guy from chicago join us as he had family i that cemetery and had the same idea we did.

plan on going back in 2024 with the grandson again. he will enjoy it more at 7 years then he did at 2 months

I headed to Maryville TN with my younger son since we have relatives there. Set up in their driveway with a spotting scope on a tripod to project the image onto a white posterboard. Had to put a piece of posterboard around the objective to throw a shadow so the image was more visible. It worked exceptionally well for everything up to totality. During totality we watched with unaided eyes, and my son managed to get a few nice pictures with his phone.

We went to Fort Bragg to visit my son and on Monday drove in to Columbia, SC to watch it.
It was great except during totality, we had a bunch of clouds.
Crap.
At least the next one is in Cleveland.

I was looking at the path of that 2024 eclipse. I bet the Neil Armstrong Museum goes all out for it.

Some photos here

The ones of totality were shot with no filter, that is how it looked to naked eye except sky was a little lighter

Nice shots, all mine turned out like garbage.

Did I just hear Cruiser invite us all over to their house for the 2024 eclipse?

We'll probably head to Forest, Never been there but it looks like the best closest spot from Columbus, Looks like it'll pass over the library there dead center.

Forest? Not familiar with this place.

I never heard of it either but I just looked on the eclipse map and looked for the closest spot north of Columbus that intersected the center line.

According to google maps it has a population of roughly 1,500
