Post subject: Looking for an Outdoor Rifle Range
Post Posted: Sun May 18, 2014 8:52 pm
Since Pistol Caliber Rifles are allowed for deer now I have invested in a .44Mag levergun. I would like to find an outdoor range where I can go and work on finding the right load to use through it. Are there any around the Cleveland area? There's an ODNR Range near the Trumbull/Portage area if I recall correctly. Wouldn't be bad to go to from time to time, but I was hoping to find something that didn't involve 3+ hours of driving time there and back.

Any place close by that I'm not aware of? I wouldn't be opposed to buying the yearly permit to shoot at ODNR ranges, but would prefer not to have to get locked into a membership someplace if at all possible. I've heard people mention a range somewhere between Cleveland and Youngstown but never been able to find out exactly where the place is. I'm willing to drive a bit to someplace good, but don't really wish to make a long drive if possible.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Two that come to mind.

Kelbly's down in Lawrence, just south of Barberton, west of Canal Fulton. 100 and 200 yard ranges. $150 per year. Really nice facility. http://www.kelbly.com

Cuyahoga sportsman club. http://www.scsasportsmen.com/. Three ranges. One just west of Medina, 100 and 200 yard. First year $228, second 290 or cheaper if you work.

I know it doesn't satisfy the "I don't want annual membership" requirement, but the rates are reasonable and it is nice to meet others and support the *few* ranges we have around.

Hope this helps!

ODNR's ranger; the Grand River is fairly close. You can buy the passes online.

Thanks Dinstar, Grand River looks like a winner. It's only about 40 miles from me. Not too long of a drive. I can make a day of it and hit the range early, then go fishing afterwards.

Do they charge you to use the ODNR ranges or is that covered by the cost of the permit?

I think a day pass is $5 and a yearly is $25.

I know the guy who runs Dillonsportsmancenter.com ;) There is no membership required there...bit it of a drive for you maybe, but folks come down from Cleveland area regularly due to the lack of range access up there. You would get to shoot with a couple of the guys who helped make rifle hunting a reality for Ohio :)

It is $6/hr to shoot...

@Hatrix,
Check out http://dillonsportsmancenter.com/

It's a bit of a pilgrimage for you but Dillon State Park has camping and you can even bring family and friends, maybe stay in a cabin and make a weekend of it?

Check out http://parks.ohiodnr.gov/dillon

Ask about the range and amenities. We look forward to meeting you.
