School zone parking lots?

Post by detlfine » Fri Jun 09, 2017 11:39 am

A buddy and I disagree on what we read so I'm hoping you all can settle this. Was reading the recent changes and don't see a definitive statement.

Can public school employees leave their firearm in their locked car on school property? From what I read it looks like its ok at public colleges but what about public high schools or other public school facilities? Private colleges? Private high schools? Are the rules different for CHL holders?

Thanks for settling this.

Newly-enacted legislation in Ohio allows storage of handguns in locked vehicles on school property, regardless of the type of school, even if they are an employee and the school prohibits employees from having firearms on the premises. Arguably, if the school prohibits employee possession of firearms on school property, the employee would still be legally allowed, and the school cannot enforce the policy, if the handgun is locked in a lockable enclosure inside of the vehicle.

Thanks for clearing that up! That's just what we were trying to figure out. Glad to be part of the BFA!

This is another reason schools should start a FASTER Saves Lives type of program. If the employees are going to have the guns in the parking lots already, it makes a lot more sense to get them trained and get the gun inside the buildings where they can save lives

Agreed. And even though most people characterize teachers as liberal gun-haters, I think you'd be surprised to how many aren't. Especially in Ohio.

Yes at least 40% of those applying for faster already had a Chl and those numbers are from 4 years ago.
