I see on-line offers for mass quantities of 5.56/.223 ammo on stripper clips. They appear to be overruns from government contracts. Are these functional in a standard AR-15 rifle or do you need to manually detach the rounds and reload them in a suitable magazine? Thanks for your responses.

You'll need a stripper clip guide and then you load the magazine of your choice from the clips.
See: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-load-an-AR15M16-magazine-using-Stripper-Cl/

And also watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIl_j1pCxfg

OBTW - I don't even own an AR-15 (my daughter does, however), and I've never fired one.
I do know how to use Google and happened to have a few spare minutes.
