Hi JL here. Been a CHL for five years and just renewed. Live in the Hamilton area. Been more concerned with training and learning proper carry and use of a concealed firearm in these last five years. Married to a lovely wife with one child and several grand kids.

Funny how I never noticed in the little book they give you, Ohio seems to have an anomaly. Page 15 "...strict laws concerning firearms in a vehicle." 2923.16(C); (Feb 2014 publication).

"(4) If the firearm is at least twenty-four inches in overall length as measured from the muzzle to the part of the stock furthest from the muzzle and if the barrel is at least eighteen inches in length, either in plain sight with the action open or the weapon stripped, or, if the firearm is of a type on which the action will not stay open or which cannot easily be stripped, in plain sight."

First time I read that it sounded like a miss print. Federal laws indicate a firearm of 26 inch and a barrel of 16 inch on a rifle and a barrel of 18 inch on a shotgun.

Can anyone help a newbie understand what Ohio means? (24 overall length and a barrel length of 18 inch without defining rifle or shotgun?)

I think it means Ohio doesn't distinguish between a rifle and shotgun for the purposes of transporting them in this manner, and for whatever reason decided to deviate from Federal law with respect to overall length and barrel length.

Keep in mind, the Federal law in question is one that defines the legality of the firearm itself, the Ohio law is about transport only, and specifically about transport of the long gun without being cased.

Welcome Aboard!

The CHL law is full of anomalies....

One of the reasons we're here is to try to sort them out....

Meantime, there's a sticky referenced in the "Forum Rules" masthead at the top of this page that you probably should have a look at, but it's not mandatory. It's likely sleep inducing, though....

Enjoy,

Stu

Joe S.

I live in the greater Cincinnati area. I have had my CHL for several years now and am hoping that the law that will allow reciprocal recognition for all states that allow carry will pass soon.

Fortunately, most of my travel today is usually to surrounding states where agreements are in place.

NRA member for years and recently joined BFA (have been stalking the site for a while though).

Looking forward to perusing topics of discussion.

I am so happy with all the Changes being made in laws with special Thanks to all of the Buckeye Firearms Association!. The Challenges in today's politics is nerve racking! BFA Pulls Through with what others cannot! I will go ahead and say it "EPIC" ! Thanks

Did I nail you with a welcome message? I tend to forget :D....

Anyway, Welcome Aboard. There's a sticky mentioned in the "Forum Rules" masthead at the top of this page that might be worth a read, but it's not mandatory. Might be hazardous to your health.... :D

Regards,

Stu

Welcome Aboard!

Being from New Jersey is good. Living there, or going there, is bad.... :D
