The 300 Win Mag is an excellent caliber as the 7MM Mag. I have both are depending on the bullet you chose to shoot both have long range bullet tradjectories. The 300 Win mag has much more recoil then the 7mm mag and would be felt more in a light rifle. The 300 Win mag has an edge at long distance but the 7mmMag is also a flat shooting rifle.

Does the 300 Win Mag really offer that much over the 30-06 that it's worth the extra cost? Same bullets are used, same COL, 30-06 is a proven long ranger perform, as is the 300 Win Mag. 30-06 has less recoil than 300 WM. with that said, wouldn't the Accuracy International stocks for Long Action Remington 700's work for 30-06? AI Mags for 300 Win Mag should work for 30-06 as well.... In theory since COL is the same or is the 300 WM case that much bigger that it wouldn't work?

Archelgray18:

Welcome Aboard!

There's a sticky at http://forums.buckeyefirearms.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=10097 that you should have a look at - at least the first couple pages - but it's not mandatory, and may be sleep inducing....

I can't help you with the 300 Win Mag question. The only rifle I own is a .22 that is "junk" when spoken of charitably. I think the .300 has considerably more velocity, though, to go with the recoil, which would make it shoot flatter, making it somewhat better than the 30-06 in that respect. I'm sure, IAC, we've got more than a few members here who'll be out front of my house picketing if I say any more :D.

WTH, buy one of each and....

Regards,

Stu

The 300 Win Mag has about 200 more feet per second over the 30.06. For many this won't matter, but when you start shooting the distance, it does. There can be many other factors in the picture, but at 1000 yards, the 30.06 can easily drop another 10 inches over the 300. 30.06 is also more susceptible to wind.

If one is shooting under 500 yards, I'd go with the 308 or 30.06. Going over 1000 yards, 300 Win Mag or larger.
