Sheriff: Standoff involves ex-Ohio police chief ... yEwCWUWQ1w

RAVENNA, Ohio (AP) -- An Ohio sheriff says deputies are in a standoff with a former police chief accused of firing a shot at his adult son.

Portage County Sheriff Duane Kaley told the Record-Courier on Wednesday that former Ravenna police chief Michael Swartout has numerous firearms in his house and refuses to come out. The paper reports that Swartout told deputies if they try to enter "there will be a conflict."

The sheriff's office says the events began Tuesday evening when Swartout fired at his son but missed, striking a vehicle instead. Officials say the standoff began overnight and that deputies have an arrest warrant for felonious assault.

Swartout resigned as police chief in 1998 after pleading guilty to using a firearm while intoxicated.

Standoff over. Swartout arrested peacefully about 12:40 PM after 33 hours. Just up the street from my ex, so my kids gave me regular updates since I knew the guy...
