Reciprocity with Texas

Post by terrywolf » Sat Feb 18, 2017 6:16 pm

I have held a resident Ohio CCL continuously since April 2004 and it was last renewed May 14, 2013. I also have non-resident-carry licenses issued by PA and FL. Recently I learned TX will only honor OH licenses issued AFTER March 22, 2015. Since TX seems to not respect my resident OH license am I legal to carry there with my non-resident permits from PA and FL?

Your PA and FL non-resident licenses are both honored in TX.

Here's a resource you can use for such questions, as well as to research state laws when traveling:

And of course with your next renewal of the Ohio license, it too will be good to go in Texas.

Your current OH CHL is not recognized by Texas because, when it was issued OH used the OH BCI for the background check. Texas requires a NICS background check before they will recognize a license to carry, which OH didn't start doing until March 2015.

As others have mentioned, you are good to go with the PA license in TX, and after your next renewal, you will have an OH license with the required background check, which will be recognized by TX as long as the reciprocity agreement doesn't change. Just for the record, WI has the same requirements as TX, as far as reciprocity with OH goes.

Thanks to all for your encouraging responses. I've long used the facility "Handgunlaw.us" to check on reciprocity questions but am nervous about the slippery slope of resident vs non-resident licenses.
