There's a lot of belt-holsters that will convert from IWB to OWB and vice-versa, with only the switch of the belt "clip."

Can you be a little more specific in terms of what the holster looked like and its materials?

I was reading on another forum and forgot to note the brand, but someone had posted a holster that was convertible from OWB to IWB, anyone seen those. Parents want to hike up the mountain behind their home (its our land) next week while we are down there. They are somewhat uncomfortable around guns despite hunting and buying me my first couple, I suppose all the years of media brainwashing. I'm going to carry in case of any bears, don't ave a CHL but WV is ok with OC. Even though we'll be on our own land so I could conceal if I wanted to I figure I would just OC to keep legal should we run into a DNR officer or logging company on neighbors land or such.

Statureman holsters makes convertible kydex holsters. I don't have much of an opinion of them as my holster won't be here til Monday, but I will update at that time.

OK, I didn't realize a lot were like that, guess I need to make a trip to Cabelas or Vances to check some out closer. I made a trip to Vances a couple weeks ago but it looks like they are all behind the counter and the wait was too long that I ran out of time before my next meeting.

IAC, you'll get to find out who the little dog in my avatar is, and see some of the folks who are here, and get a little idea of how this place operates. It's a pretty good insomnia cure, too. (You don't need to read the whole thing.)

Can't say much about the holsters (to get back on topic).... DeSantis and Don Hume have done well enough by me over the years. You tend to buy four or five holsters, and toss all but one (if you're lucky) into the drawer anyway - it's a fairly personal thing. The custom guys will probably come closer to what you really want, and many of them aren't particularly expensive, but wait times might be a tad long.

I always tell people to find a store that handles "Uncle Mike's", and grab four or five that look like they might work. Then, if you find one that you really like, find a source for a very similar design in good leather. The Uncle Mike's holsters can be used for the range, short-term storage, or other essentially non-carry uses.

(Don't store a gun in a holster.... Wrap 'em in vapor paper, and then into something a bit more secure. Unless you're heading for the range anyway ....)

I kind of push range holsters.... My club range is just one big room, and we walk out to the line from the benches, the line being just a distance mark on the side walls. If you need to secure a gun while clearing a jam, having a holster on your belt is very convenient. Helps, too, if you need to assist one of the other shooters. I've got an Uncle Mike's that's nearly ten years old that's "on duty" about once a week, on the range. It still looks about as nice as when I bought it.

I also hate Kydex.... I have a couple - came with some Tupperguns - and just can't talk myself into using one for carry. However, the one that came with my M&P40FS is pretty decent. I had one that came with a Springfield XD9C that wasn't a bad range or duty holster, but it canted the gun off your body about fifteen degrees. Great for tucking a jacket under it, but really stuck out for concealment.... Mostly, though, I think they can scratch your gun (I'm not trying to accumulate safe queens - if I have it, I'll likely carry it once in a while), and mostly can't be "formed" for best fit.

The Kydex folks tell you that they form the holster for you, but I'm old school enough to prefer to do it myself .... 40+ years ago, mom used to walk into my bathroom and find a plastic-wrapped revolver in a holster, floating in one of the bathroom sinks. "Now what did you buy this time?".... My wife wouldn't freak, but doesn't quite get that .... (We moved back in with mom in 2009 to help take care of her. She promptly decided to "winter" in El Paso, and never came back. Probably my cooking.... I'm sitting in what was once my bedroom right now.)

I drove over and picked my holster from Hidden Hybrid yesterday. What are your thoughts about them so far?

I have used http://www.kelleygunleather.com/ for my 1911s. Great leather holsters. I have the OWB Swift.

Also http://sascustomholsters.com/ based in (I believe) Sydney, OH. I catch up with Stacey at the Dayton and Columbus gun shows to have custom kydex holsters and mag holders made.

Need something with a nice padding, I heard comfort holsters, n82, and aliengear have this, does anyone else?
