CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced a new website Tuesday that allows people buying used firearms to check whether the gun was previously reported stolen.

“This is a tool for gun buyers and law enforcement alike that will lead to the recovery of stolen firearms and serve as a deterrent for criminals seeking to make a quick buck,” Yost said in a press release.

The Stolen Gun Portal allows people to enter a gun’s serial number and see whether it’s been stolen before.

The database will get information from local law enforcement agencies, which report information on stolen guns to the Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS).

LEADS is administered by the Ohio Department of Public Safety.

“Most gun violence is committed by convicted felons who are prohibited from possessing a weapon,” Ohio Department of Public Safety Director Tom Stickrath said. “Far too many people are dying, and this new resource is vital to public safety.”

The database is updated with new information every 24 hours.

Not a bad idea and wonder why it has not come up before..So what happens if a firearm does show up hot. Does law enforcement contact us?

No, it would be up to you to contact law enforcement to let them know you've found a stolen firearm. I and others have already searched the database for known-stolen serial numbers without ill effect.
