  • weak hand poket knife

Looking for suggestions for a weak hand (left) easy open pocket knife.

I figured out today the knife I've been carrying in my left pocket at work, where I came CCW, is not left hand friendly. I tried and tried to open the kershaw ken onion vapor II left handed, and it was near impossible defiantly not sufficient enough for self defense.

Flick of the wrist won't open it?

Not just a flick if I give it help with my thumb and a flick yes, but its hard to get the nubby on the blade left hand. The outter shell isn't groved or beveled like it is on the other side so its hard to get the nubby (I think that's the technical term).

I put my small kershaw ken onion in my left pocket for now, it has a nub that proudest out the back to push blade out. I prefer a bigger blade for my weak side.

Not sure if someone has mentioned this here or not, but...
Carrying a knife in Ohio is a possibly tricky move. Any knife can be considered a deadly weapon, see ORC 2923.12. If you carry a knife as a defensive weapon, you can be charged with a CCW violation. Our CHL covers a handgun only, not any other weapon one might carry. It seems as though it is a subjective test: if they decide you carry a knife as a weapon, as opposed to a tool, e.g the knife you keep around to cut cable ties and boxes (my use for a knife), they can charge you with carrying concealed weapons.
I’m not a lawyer, of course but... FWIW.

@techguy: We discuss this a lot; far as I'm concerned any knife I carry is for use as a tool, not a weapon. The law dogs would have to prove otherwise, and I can bring character witnesses along who have known me since Cub Scouts that would vouch I've harmlessly toted a pocket knife for 40 + years now.

As far as the lefty-friendly knives, it's good to have a place to look at a big selection in person, and a knowledgeable dealer to talk to. For some that would mean a gun show; in the SW we are lucky to have Cecil Clark Cutlery in Newport Ky. Such vendors can tell you pretty quickly which models are available with switchable pocket clips or even made as reverse image knives.

If you looked at my knives you would quickly realize they are tools. Sometimes they are scrapers, screw drivers, prybars, cable cutters, wire cutters, wire strippers, drills, bag openers, etc. I use my pocket knife for everything, luckily I carry a mulitool at work that is actually meant for some of these functions. Cheap knives just don't hold up in my hands.

Gerber ez out or cheap spyderco like a tenacious are often good choices I have seen people use.

I carry a gerber ez out on my left ( weak) side and a Kershaw compound on my strong side.

+1 This has been my EDC for about 10 years.

After a childhood accident where a 'Buck Lockback' failed and I am still carrying the scar from, I have carried a fixed blade knife. Since knives must be carried openly in Ohio, everything up until I found the TDI, was 'too obvious' for office carry and they generally also dug into my side making them uncomfortable.

The small version of the TDI with the angle of the grip and an IWB sheath, disappears under my ribs and doesn't dig in to my side. I can't imagine a better EDC knife especially for off-side carry where you may not have as developed of motor skills to open a folder.

Only down side is that carrying on my left side, all knife classes I have taken, let me see what all the lefties in my gun class deal with
