  • Stop Making Killers Famous

    7:00AM WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 07, 2019

While we don't yet have all the facts on the mass murder in Dayton, we do know a lot about about these kind of horrible acts and the people who commit them.

Modern mass killers generally display three traits: 1) they suffer from severe depression, 2) they feel socially isolated, 3) they are pathologically narcissistic, convinced that they have been wronged or cheated by society. So they lash out to harm as many people as they can as a form of revenge and as a way to be noticed and taken seriously.

    They kill to become famous.

The prevalence of these active killer crimes has increased as mass media coverage of the killers has increased. Since the mid-1990s, as 24-hour news coverage and social media has exploded, this quest for fame among mass killers has also skyrocketed.

"Mass murders of the type we saw in Dayton are a very specific type of crime," said Dean Rieck, Executive Director of Buckeye Firearms Association. "Basically, mentally troubled people see mass murder as an easy formula for instant fame. They see around-the-clock media coverage focusing their attention on killers, glamorizing their actions, and are therefore motivated to commit "copycat" murders to gain similar fame.

"It's time for the media to stop participating in this gruesome reality show and stop making killers famous. If the media would simply agree to stop reporting the names of these killers, stop showing their faces, and stop sharing their statements and manifestos, we could see a significant reduction in this sort of crime."

There is a precedent for this simple concept. At one time, the media reported on suicides. However, research showed that suicide can be "contagious," so the media changed their policies and dramatically reduced their reporting on these events. In the same way, a significant portion of active killer events are contagious, encouraging other troubled individuals to commit similar crimes.

"We don't claim that pledging to stop making killers famous will stop all such crimes," continued Rieck. "However, it costs nothing, requires no contentious legislation, and is completely bipartisan and nonpolitical. So why not try it?"

Even the FBI backs this approach in conjunction with the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training program at Texas State University. They say, "It is journalistically routine to name the killer. It’s public record and it is important to use their names and likenesses to apprehend them and bring them to justice. However, once they are captured, it’s really no longer a part of the story, other than to create a call to action for a like-minded killer to take their plans and thoughts and make them into deeds."

This More blaming everyone else’s excuses needs to stop.

Now we are going to limit the free press? I’ve already seen web sites and news forums refusing to allow his manifesto on their sites. Why?

We found out the Politicians and media have been lying about it.

We need to see it for ourselves to confirm the facts.

You want to stop the fame of these psychos?

Stop them before they get started. One or two getting shot isn’t glorifying enough. When people start to stop these people in their tracks they will think, what would be the point. They will get as much media/TV time as jumping off a bridge.

This is why we need more people armed not less. That’s why it is disgusting both parties are attacking our 2A and the whole Bill Of Rights that will make even more victims, more attempts of fame.

We are in a fight for our country not seen since the Civil War.

    What side are you on?

Dangerous Freedom or Peaceful Slavery?! Your choice. Choose wisely

Sorry to disagree with you there rifleman...but there is NO WAY IN HELL that I'm going to let you go on the attack with this one. Leave your "what side are you on" BS somewhere else! I'm getting rather tired of the rancor.

Yes... more armed citizens would be GREAT. I agree, that is the best solution we could ask for during an active shooter scenario... a certified good guy right there to "stop the threat" immediately, game over! The fact that you would rather focus on the armed citizen being there to stop the threat, as opposed to logical measures to reduce the number of threats to begin with (less dead citizens) is disturbing.

No one has asked for legislation on this, tho I personally suggested it yrs ago. Imagine how quickly the media would start defending their "constitutional right" to freedom of the press if the gun lobby attacked them in this manner? Why should the 2A be the only constitutional right under constant attack? Maybe that would scare them straight if they see the same tactics used against the 1st that they are using against the 2nd! They want to attack the constitution...HELL WITH IT, let's let's attack it all!

Regardless, we are simply asking the media to quit glorifying these murderer's! We aren't saying hide everything to do with the case and don't let the public have access to it. We are calling for the media to VOLUNTARILY STOP PERPETUATING THE PROBLEM and that is all. Imagine if instead of the name of the individual, or the word "gunman" were used as reference in any media coverage... we insert the word murderer? Instead of the murderer's image we insert images of the citizens that murderer took from us? No more glory...

Make the image available to the public, make their name available to the public, do it ins such a way that anyone can find it, go get it, look at it, research it, whatever... but let's eliminate the "fame" associated with these nefarious acts!

ASK FOR? Who do you want to ask to have the ability to be armed to protect your own life to stop these shooters??

An Armed citizenry at the attacking spot isn't a logical solution to you but you think we can read people's minds, stop the media reporting the names of these people and that will stop these shootings? That's gotta be joke. Constitutional Carry would IMMEDIATELY put the ability to stop it. Again, if these lunatics see they would be lucky to get off one or two shots, what would be their point other than having someone to shoot them to help their ambition to die?

Funny, the media has been more compliant on not listing these guys names and yet the shootings are going up. In fact, the Dayton shooter said he was doing the shooting in part because he "wanted more gun control". Wow, imagine that, and the Politicians from both parties are complying, talk about an incentive to shoot up another mall or fair.

You think you have to be "certified" to stop an active shooter?

I'm not "CERTIFIED", been carrying guns in some form since I was 15 years old. But in your mind, unless you were trained and have a permission slip from your tyrant you couldn't stop a violent armed shooter? That's BULLSHIT! It's in the news everyday where gun owners shoots home invaders and they were not "certified", Same in Constitution Carry states.

Your arrogance. lack of understanding of the true intent of the 2nd Amendment, lack of faith in your fellow man is pretty evident. No wonder the BFA negotiates our 2nd Amendment rights away like they have done in the past. Just like the NRA you do not fully support the 2nd Amendment. you say you do BUT, isn't that what you think of the 2nd Amendment? There's a BUT, However or maybe at the end of 2A in your mind.

I missed that part can you show me where that is exactly?

It sounds more like you agree with Universal Background checks and Red flag laws that not.

We need to be fighting for Ohioans and Americans nationwide for Constitutional carry and SCREAM in the media that we need to arm ourselves to protect ourselves. If you think the Government can protect you or even obligated too, you would be wrong on both counts. And that's the problem. If you want the media to report on anything, you should demand them to report that fact.

No one has asked for legislation on this, tho I personally suggested it yrs ago. That not logical or right. 1st, many would agree with you. 2nd, You don't point out bad behavior to justify bad behavior, or in this case, wiping your ass with the Constitution to prove a point.

Regardless, we are simply asking the media to quit glorifying these murderer's! We aren't saying hide everything to do with the case and don't let the public have access to it. This may be the case for some of these shooters but not all. that's why this is waste of time and gives the media permission to not report many of the facts like they have been doing already. Totally disagree with this strategy to stop anyone who want to kill people because they have a political agenda or a death wish. The fame aspect is a SMALL FACTOR and is ridiculous to think this will help stop these shootings.

Make the image available to the public, make their name available to the public, do it ins such a way that anyone can find it, go get it, look at it, research it, whatever... but let's eliminate the "fame" associated with these nefarious acts!

Wait, you want the media, who are the ones who writes the stories and reports these shooting and you want them to stop using their names and what ever else, how would you research the facts of that shooter if no one is reporting that information? What would be the point anyway?

You are aiming at one crow trying to bring down the whole murder of crows.

Actually, studies have shown that when media reports on suicides, there are more suicides.
So many don't report them, with corresponding decrease in suicides.
Or is saving someone's life a joke to you?

And yes, killers do sometimes copy cat prior crimes. Talk to the police. Well known.
And guess what? Active killer events make it harder to pass good gun legislation. So anything that reduces the number of people attempting mass murder, is helping us to restore our rights.

          It's all related.
