The thing is most if not all power companies intend to start charging based on time of day usage.

It use to be they checked it once a month and they and they had no way of knowing when the usage was made.

with these smart meters they have up to the second data.. and are going ot start charring what htey call "peek hours"
what "peek hours" will be varies but probably 8am - 7pm or something like that.
you'll pay 2,3,4 maybe 5x normal rate.

most use 802.11 wifi, I know the ones they installed in my neighborhoods have a very strong signal.
I suspect most of these meters are exceeding or at the very least at the maximum output allowed by the FCC for unlicensed transmission.

I believe 2 watts.. is the limit under FCC.

If I had the money I would convert to solar but the upfront cost of solar is in the ten's of thousands.

Who knows what else they can gleam from the meters.
I personally am not a fan.

I'm planning a phase in solar power plan. I plan to go 2 panels and 2 batterys at a time, enough to power the refrigerator. That way if the power goes out for an extended period, the fridge will still be OK. Then expand by adding panels and batteries to cover my deep freezer, then the sump pump, then the hot water heater and so on. It's easier to swallow than 25k all at once. I hope to start implementing this over the summer. I need to build a shed first, I want the batteries and inverters outside my house.

We live in the country and have co-op power. They've never had meter readers--you read it yourself and call it in. But they installed smart meters that automatically send in your usage a couple years ago.

They haven't implemented time-of-day pricing yet, but they're talking about it. Main reason is only generation plant Ohio co-ops own is a coal-fired plant and they're scared to death of the EPA. They're right to be scared because those asshats have already shut down coal plants elsewhere.

I have real mixed feelings about this smart meter technology and the whole smart grid business. I think smart grids just make us much more vulnerable to hacker attacks.

That's a good point, I think most of these are using standard 802.11 wifi.. at least the ones in my area are cause I can see them.

Someone will figure out how to hack them.. well start using them as a mesh net.

or maybe they'll figure out how to cheat the meter, These meters run 24/7 even on houses that do not have service, they can kill your electric without ever touching a pole right from HQ.

Hacking this technology seems like a skill worth knowing if you want to defeat every alarm that does not have a battery backup. Just sayin.
