Still a need for FL CCW license...?

Post by Friar » Sat Jan 30, 2016 9:30 am

It appears that with my resident Ohio license to carry a concealed handgun I no longer gain any additional states by having my Florida non-resident license as well.

Is this really correct? If so, there's no need for me to spend the $102 to renew.

HOWEVER...here's the catch that maybe some of the more knowledgeable folks may know about. My Ohio license was granted prior to Ohio expanding their background check to the current higher level (I believe that's the NICS-compliant background check). So does anyone know if I should go ahead and renew the FL license, presuming they DO use the NICS check, to close any potential loopholes? Best I can tell, my OH license gives me 40 states and adding FL doesn't change that - unless as I said there are certain states that won't honor my pre-NICS Ohio license.

Sure wish we could get to the same point as a driver's license...

Texas and Wisconsin do not honor a pre-NICS Ohio license, but TX does honor FL so keeping your FL license active until your next OH renewal might make sense if you think you might have occasion to travel to TX.

Otherwise, there is no real benefit to keeping the FL license active - unless you spend a lot of time in FL, in that case there are benefits to having a local license.

IMHO, if you can afford it, keep it....

With the silliness that Zero's fellow travelers (or masters) have been pulling at the State level lately (like VA), it might be handy someday.

Something else to keep in mind that several states only recognise a resident license only; Michigan is one.
